The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy — by Douglas Adams

Stream of consciousness review:

My brother gifted me a paperback copy of this classic just before I left for 5 weeks of travel. The timing was perfect as I’d always wanted to read the original text of this cult classic and what better a time than when traveling solo around the world.

Having seen the movie and paid attention to the pop culture around Hitchhiker’s Guide, I went eyes wide open into this one. Mostly just anxious to discover the question behind the answer to the meaning of life.

I don’t read much fiction, which I’m working on changing, but starting with Hitchhiker’s Guide was special since it not only pulled me back into the whimsical world of fiction, but it also took that to the next level by pushing beyond the confines of Earth alone. The story, equal parts coming of age and folklore for the reader, has you wondering the whole time how it might end.

With the setting immediately leaving Earth and expanding into the limitless confines of space, you never quite know what, when, or where may or may not happen. By the end, I found affinity for characters that I initially had found annoying. Half the battle of the read is assimilating into this new universe of unique names and untraditional order, however, once you settle in, you’re in for a fun ride full of surprises.

I’m not chomping at the bits to go read the rest of the series, but I enjoyed my read and feel everyone should take the time to have a first hand perspective into the universe of Douglas Adams.

No highlights this time, I went paperback, though, this passage opening Chapter 23 resonated so deeply that I took a photo of it. We could learn a thing or two from the dolphins.
